Weather Resistant Coatings for Gadgets Invented
We just found this really interesting article on a coating that makes electronic devices weather proof. Well - splash proof is a more accurate description, but none the less - your iPhone may soon be safe at the beach.
A team of scientists from the Northeast Maritime Institute have invented a unique coating substance which protects gadgets against whatever perils which might be a result of contact with liquids. The coating, which the inventors say is ideal for application in the electronics industry, effectively shields the operational equipment in a way that prevents all damages otherwise caused by exposure to severe weather conditions including acute rain, moisture, and humid environments.
In the developed coating process, a vacuum deposited film is produced – a nonflammable, low toxicity material, which according to the scientists, has the ability to make electronic devices and other surfaces” splash-proof”. This uniform film, which was given the nickname “Golden Shellback”, is clear in appearance, almost non-detectable, and insoluble in solvents. Once applied to clean, moisture-free surfaces it provides them an impenetrable covering with sound weather proofing and anti-corrosion properties, allowing them to withstand contact with more than just water.
