WeatherWise: Keep Mosquitoes and Insects Out of Your Rain Barrel

rainbarrel.jpg

We love our rain barrel. It looks terrific in our back yard and conserves natural rain water for our thirsty shrubs and plants. Tap water maintains plants--they thrive on rain water.

Trouble is, mosquito larvae thrive in warm sitting water, plus beetles, flies, bees and other assorted creepy crawlies fall in. Custom fit your rain barrel with a lid made of small netting. Inexpensive window screening works perfectly and is readily available at your local home center. Alternatively drill large holes 1 to 2 inches in diameter in the rain barrel's lid.
