MyWeather Desktop and Mobile App for iPhone and Android

Today's US weather map above indicates that excessive heat warnings and advisories are in effect across much of the country, affecting some 100 million of us.

Weather apps are critically important to anyone outside for an extended period of time, whether working, swimming, hiking, boating, playing sports, walking the dog. An intriguing new free app provides instantly updated weather for all the places that matter to you.

Save as many locations as you'd like: home, vacation and recreational spots, relatives' homes, work sites.

You can also send yourself SMS alerts.

  • Touch the arrow next to any of your locations to view detailed current conditions: heat index/wind chill, dew point, humidity, precipitation amount, pressure (mb or inches), and wind speed/direction.
  • Plan ahead: get the 10-day forecast for any location, with a visual summary of the sky condition, high/low temperature and chance of rain.
  • View the hourly forecast on an easy-to-understand graph, and instantly see the weather trend for your location. Turn your iPhone sideways and the graph fills your screen. Touch any point along the graph to see that hour's forecasted sky condition and temperature.
  • A full-color radar map centers in on your selected location. Turn your iPhone sideways for a full-screen, interactive map. Choose a display mode (road map or terrain view) and see lightning, storm cells, temperatures, wind speed and more. Ship's Hull Tendency Barometer

You can forecast weather just like 17th Century mariners did with this wall mounted Ship's Hull Tendency Barometer. Glass tubes are positioned above a model sailing ship's wooden hull. We understand that barometers measure atmospheric pressure, but what exactly is a tendency barometericon?

The tendency barometer was patented on December 23, 1818 by Alexander Adie, a Scottish optician, calling it a Sympiesometer. Sir James Clark Ross used it on his expeditions. The tendency barometer consists of two liquid filled tubes mounted parallel to each other. The barometer tube is in a U-shape, which is open-ended and filled with a red fluid, and a closed thermometer tube is filled with a blue fluid. You can predict the weather with glance across the room:

  • When the fluid levels are equal, the weather is changing.
  • When the red fluid level is below the blue fluid level, the weather is fair since high pressure pushes the red fluid down in the tube.
  • When the red fluid level is above the blue, stormy weather is predicted as low pressure allows the red fluid to rise in the tube.

The Ship's Hull Tendency Barometer would make a tremendous Father's Day gift. It comes fully assembled on a frosted-glass frame and sturdy hanging hardware is included.

Ambient Devices 7 Day Forecaster

We recently saw this updated and rather large forecaster at Sharper Image. We have the 5 day version, and can see why covering all the days of the week in the 7 day version might be a good idea. The 7-Day Forecaster boasts a six- by six-inch screen, and will show "current conditions and an extended multi-day forecast for 150 locations in the United States." Also the 7 day has information about the UV Index, wind speed and direction, pollen alerts and air quality alerts. We like the updates - especially the wind speed - as it really can help to determine the true temperature. Also - having weather alert warnings should be a standard on any forecasting weather device.

Weather In A Bottle - Stormglass Weather Predicting Instruments

The Stormglass is a bottle full of liquid designed to forecast the weather. The changes in the atmosphere ahead of on-coming weather fronts cause different crystals to grow in the liquid. Each type of crystal predicts a different type of weather – on average, two days in advance. Discovered hundreds of years ago by the early alchemists, the Stormglass was soon adopted by seafarers in particular because of its uncanny ability to predict storms.

You may choose to monitor your Weather In A Bottle Stormglass and let it bring you a new awareness of our everchanging environment, or you may choose just to admire it for the sheer beauty of its constantly evolving crystal formations. We think the former is the way to go - better be on top of the weather than underneath it.
