The Old Farmer's Almanac 2011 Edition -- Estimate the Temperature from a Cricket's Chirp

farmersalmanac2011.jpg

The Old Farmer's Almanac 2011, which marks the publication's 219th anniversary, contains weather predictions for every day and climatic trends for each season, plus the science behind weather folklore. It also boasts "the most accurate astronomical data under the sun", with best-viewing recommendations for every month.

For instance, The Old Farmer's Almanac teaches nature's formula to estimate the temperature counting cricket chirps. The method:

To convert cricket chirps to degrees Fahrenheit, count number of chirps in 14 seconds then add 40 to get temperature. For example: 30 chirps + 40 = 70° F

To convert cricket chirps to degrees Celsius, count number of chirps in 25 seconds, divide by 3, then add 4 to get temperature. For example: 48 chirps / 3 + 4 = 20° C

or try this Cricket Chirp Calculator.

Ship's Hull Tendency Barometer

shipshull.jpg

You can forecast weather just like 17th Century mariners did with this wall mounted Ship's Hull Tendency Barometer. Glass tubes are positioned above a model sailing ship's wooden hull. We understand that barometers measure atmospheric pressure, but what exactly is a tendency barometericon?

The tendency barometer was patented on December 23, 1818 by Alexander Adie, a Scottish optician, calling it a Sympiesometer. Sir James Clark Ross used it on his expeditions. The tendency barometer consists of two liquid filled tubes mounted parallel to each other. The barometer tube is in a U-shape, which is open-ended and filled with a red fluid, and a closed thermometer tube is filled with a blue fluid. You can predict the weather with glance across the room:

  • When the fluid levels are equal, the weather is changing.
  • When the red fluid level is below the blue fluid level, the weather is fair since high pressure pushes the red fluid down in the tube.
  • When the red fluid level is above the blue, stormy weather is predicted as low pressure allows the red fluid to rise in the tube.

The Ship's Hull Tendency Barometer would make a tremendous Father's Day gift. It comes fully assembled on a frosted-glass frame and sturdy hanging hardware is included.

Maintain a Healthy and Comfortable Humidity Level in Your Home and Office with a Moisture Meter -- Honeywell TM005X Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer

moisturediagram.jpg

High humidity has already set in at our Weather Snob headquarters and will soon be the prevailing condition around most of the U.S. Living in a high-humidity area, we know that moisture control is the key to mold control. Mold, mildew, and other biological growths from high humidity, showers, clothes dryers can adversely affect your health in the form of allergic reactions and asthma attacks.

The EPA recommends maintaining the relative humidity in your home and office between 30 percent and 50 percent. You can monitor this with a moisture or humidity meter or hygrometer, a small, inexpensive ($10-$50) instrument widely available.

hygro426.jpg

The Honeywell TM005X Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer, for instance, has a jumbo LCD display for easy readings from across the room. The display toggles from temperature to humidity in bold digits for easy reading. Its wireless sensor transmits temperature and humidity data from up 100 feet away.

Chaney Instrument Galileo Thermometer with Glass Globe Barometer

galileoglobe.jpg

Place one of these eye-catching Galileo units on your desk or bookshelf. It will surely be noticed. This Galileo Thermometer with Glass Globe Barometer from Chaney Instrument blends old and new technology to provide your desktop weather report. The entire unit is mounted on a wood base.

How does it work? A Galileo thermometer is filled with a clear liquid that suspends multiple colored weighted glass bubbles. As the liquid within the bubbles changes temperature, their density also changes, allowing the weights to rise or fall and thus creating a gauge.

The glass water barometer responds to changes in the air temperature. Fair weather is indicated by a low fluid level in the glass spout while a higher fluid level in the glass spout means inclement weather is in your future. This decorative barometer features a lovely etching of our Earth's continents.

Conant Custom Brass ComfortMeter Temperature and Humidity Control

conantcomfortmaster.jpg

Those warm, steamy days are in our forecast and will be here before we know it. We can keep things in the comfort zone for ourselves and our homes with the aid of this Conant Custom Brass ComfortMeter Temperature and Humidity Control. It monitors temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius on the left scale and the hygrometer shows percent of relative humidity on the right side.

The Comfortmeter provides valuable information for homes with wood cabinets, wood furniture, trim or flooring. Not enough humidity can actually dry out and shrink wood fixtures, and homes with too much humidity are more susceptible to damaging mold spores, mildew and dust mites. When conditions are monitored and kept within the green zone, these issues can more easily be prevented. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
