While we love our electronic weather gadgets, it's important to learn to predict the weather on our own too. Nature actually tells us a lot of what we need to know if we pay attention and can read the signs.
We found a quick primer on the basics over at the Art of Manliness, Forecast the Weather Like Daniel Boone covering Cloud Signs, Proverbs That Stand the Test of Time and Tools of the Trade: The Barometer, which should interest you if you are a budding or seasoned weather buff.
While we can observe cloud signs and memorize the weather proverbs as the above article recommends, in order to predict accurately we really need to measure atmospheric pressure. So yes, a barometer is a gadget, but not an electronic one. Once we have our barometer, we then need to be able to interpret it. The aforementioned article provides a barometer reference card (below), taken from Skills for Taming the Wilds by Bradford Angier.
High humidity has already set in at our Weather Snob headquarters and will soon be the prevailing condition around most of the U.S. Living in a high-humidity area, we know that moisture control is the key to mold control. Mold, mildew, and other biological growths from high humidity, showers, clothes dryers can adversely affect your health in the form of allergic reactions and asthma attacks.
The EPA recommends maintaining the relative humidity in your home and office between 30 percent and 50 percent. You can monitor this with a moisture or humidity meter or hygrometer, a small, inexpensive ($10-$50) instrument widely available.
The Honeywell TM005X Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer, for instance, has a jumbo LCD display for easy readings from across the room.
