How to Forecast the Weather Without Electronic Gadgets
While we love our electronic weather gadgets, it's important to learn to predict the weather on our own too. Nature actually tells us a lot of what we need to know if we pay attention and can read the signs.
We found a quick primer on the basics over at the Art of Manliness, Forecast the Weather Like Daniel Boone covering Cloud Signs, Proverbs That Stand the Test of Time and Tools of the Trade: The Barometer, which should interest you if you are a budding or seasoned weather buff.
While we can observe cloud signs and memorize the weather proverbs as the above article recommends, in order to predict accurately we really need to measure atmospheric pressure. So yes, a barometer is a gadget, but not an electronic one. Once we have our barometer, we then need to be able to interpret it. The aforementioned article provides a barometer reference card (below), taken from Skills for Taming the Wilds by Bradford Angier.
